Forget new striker, Tottenham need to prioritise this position in the summer

COMMENT By Dominic Toner

Many Tottenham fans are urging chairman Daniel Levy to invest in a new forward in the summer to help support Harry Kane, but the north London club need to prioritise a defender.

Spurs currently have Kane as their main source of goals as summer acquisition Vincent Janssen has failed to settle in the Premier League.

However, Mauricio Pochettino’s side have proved they have have goals all over the pitch with the likes of Dele Alli, Heung Min-Son and Christian Eriksen also chipping in.

A new back-up striker would of course be a welcomed addition to the Spurs squad, but surely Janssen deserves another year to prove himself and there is another area that needs sorting first.

Spurs have switched to a 3-4-3 formation this season, something that has served them very well.

They are up to second in the Premier League table and look as solid as anyone in the division.

Pochettino does need to address the problem of Eric Dier, though, who has lost a sense of identity this campaign.

The 23-year-old has filled the right centre-back role this season and done a steady job, with Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen providing the perfect partners.

Spurs should target a specialist centre-back to come into the back three and allow them to keep the same shape.

Premier League regulars Virgil Van Dijk and Michael Keane are the sorts of players that should appeal to the Londoners and would be much better fits in Spurs’ backline.

This would allow Dier to push forward back into a midfield role and compete for his spot alongside Victor Wanyama, Harry Winks and Mousa Dembele.

Dier proved last season his qualities as the defensive midfielder at White Hart Lane and has looked nowhere near his best this term in defence.

The England international has been back in midfield during the break and looked more at home in the 1-0 defeat to Germany in Dortmund.

Pochettino’s starting line-up is very impressive and strong enough to push aside most teams in the Premier League, but Dier moving back into the midfield should create an ever better balance.
