Leeds are reportedly interested in a summer move for Rangers forward Martyn Waghorn.
The Daily Mail claim that the Whites are keeping tabs on the 27-year-old, who has just 15 months left on his contract.
The report details the Yorkshire club are in a race to sign the English striker and face competition from Huddersfield, Nottingham Forest and Sunderland.
He has a prolific record during his time with Rangers in Scotland, scoring 15 goals in just 31 appearances this season.
However, Waghorn has failed to cut the grade in England and has managed just six appearances in the Premier League.
Here, Football Insider looks at three options that would be better for Garry Monk’s side next season, regardless of whether they’re competing in the Championship or Premier League.
Leeds could turn their attention to emerging Chelsea youngster Tammy Abraham, who has thrived during his loan spell at Bristol City this season. He is set to return to Stamford Bridge at the end of the season, but Monk should enquire about the availability of another loan move. The 19-year-old has scored 22 goals in just 40 appearanes this season and would be an excellent addition for the Whites. Leeds would surely have a greater offer if they can provide Premier League football next season, something Abraham has only experienced briefly. The young English striker would be able to provide competition for Chris Wood and give Monk the opportunity to play with a two-man attack.
Leicester forward Leonardo Ulloa could be a good option for Monk to consider and his future is certainly unclear after he tried to force a move away from the Foxes in January. The 30-year-old stayed professional sine and Leeds should offer him a way out in the summer. The Argentinian forward is certainly an under-rated member of the Leicester squad and played a pivotal role in their Premier League survival in the 2014/15 season. He is superb in the air, composed in front of goal, and would be a great asset to the Leeds squad. Ulloa would be able to contribute strongly in either the Championship or Premier League, having proven himself in both.
Southampton forward Shane Long would be a signing that would surely get the Leeds fans excited. The 30-year-old is an experienced player that would help boost Monk’s squad. He is fully of pace and energy, something that could work quite well alongside talisman Chris Wood. Long has made 36 appearances for the Saints this campaign, but has completed 90 minutes on just eight occasions. The Yorkshire club would be able to offer him a fresh start if they get promoted to the top-flight and he could certainly be a hit at Elland Road.
In other Leeds news, a Sky Sports pundit has delivered his verdict on the club’s promotion chances.
