'Forgot he was even on the pitch' - Exclusive: Darren Bent rips into Everton 'Passenger'
Darren Bent has ripped into Everton midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson after his anonymous performance against Chelsea.
The former Tottenham and Aston Villa striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, admits he forgot that the Iceland international was on the pitch during the 4-0 drubbing at Stamford Bridge.
As revealed exclusively by Football Insider, the coaching staff were left alarmed by the 30-year-old’s stats from Sunday’s game, with the lowest number of sprints from an outfield player.
Goals from Mason Mount, Pedro, Willian and Olivier Giroud secured all three points for Frank Lampard’s men.
Bent admits that it was a worrying performance from the man wearing the captain’s armband.
“With the stats about tackling and interceptions, that’s not his strong point – Gylfi Sigurdsson’s a creative player,” Bent told Football Insider.

“He’s not one to put tackles in and all that but he didn’t really do much. He was kind of a passenger when you watched the game.
“I forgot he was even on the pitch and when you’re the captain as he was, obviously you’re going to get singled out for criticism. It was not a good performance.”
Sigurdsson started Sunday’s defeat playing on the left-hand side of the attack, before moving into a more central position for the second half after Bernard’s withdrawal.
He has a total of 29 appearances under his belt for the Toffees this season but has contributed just two goals and two assists across all competitions.
