Former Arsenal player reaches agreement to rejoin club next season - report

By Aramide Oladipo

Former Arsenal attacking midfielder Marc Overmars is set to rejoin the club next season, according to a report.

Italian news outlet Tuttomercatoweb claims that 44-year-old has reached an agreement with the Gunners and he will leave his current role as director of football at Dutch giants Ajax.

However, it is unclear whether the former Netherlands international will assume the same role at the Emirates Stadium next season.

Overmars has assumed the role at the Eredivisie side since 2012, overseeing the club lift two league titles in the process.

The Dutchman is set to become the second former to make a return to the club after Jens Lehmann, goalkeeper during the unbeaten 2003-04 campaign, took up a coaching role at the beginning of the season.

Overmars is considered to be one of the greatest players in Arsenal’s history, after playing an integral role in helping Arsene Wenger achieve his first ever Premier League and FA Cup double as Gunners boss during the 1998-99 season.

The former winger opened the scoring in the FA Cup final as Arsenal comfortably beat Newcastle United 2-0 at the old Wembley Stadium.

The Dutchman departed North London to join La Liga giants Barcelona in 2000 after having notched up a total of 41 goals in 142 appearances for the club.

Arsenal supporters will be delighted to hear that one of their former greats is looking to come back to the club. The Gunners’ fans have griped for years about the lack of former heroes currently involved within the club and with Overmars enjoying success with Ajax, his arrival will be greeted with excitement and anticipation. However, with the Wenger at the helm, it might be tough for the former winger to assert his authority at the Emirates Stadium given the Frenchman’s previous history. If Overmars manages to succeed at Arsenal, it could open the door for more former players to return and get the club back to where they believe they deserve to be.

In other Arsenal news, the Gunners are reportedly interested in signing this Manchester United player.
