Former Liverpool star Dietmar Hamann has claimed that the club is unlikely to make any signings in the upcoming January transfer window.
Jurgen Klopp’s side have been heavily linked with several players ahead of the winter window, with the need for defensive reinforcements deemed particularly important.
The Reds made several advances for highly-rated Southampton centre-back Virgil Van Dijk in the summer, but failed to secure the Dutch international as Saints held firm in the face of their interest.
Klopp did secure the signing of central midfielder Naby Keita, but the RB Leipzig star is not set to join the Anfield club until the end of the season.
Despite their failure to address their defensive issues, Liverpool have nevertheless had a good first half of the season.
They currently sit in fourth in the Premier League, occupying the final Champions League spot ahead of Arsenal and Tottenham, the competition in which they have secured progress into the last-16, where they will play Porto.
Now, Hamann has revealed that he does not think his former club will sign anyone in the upcoming window, despite the obvious need for reinforcements.
Speaking to football site AskFans, Hamann said: “They need a centre back and a holiding midfielder. These positions haven’t been addressed in the summer, so I don’t think the manager will address them now because he didn’t feel the need to bring somebody in.
“They set their sights on Van Dijk, that didn’t happen for some reason and he said he was happy with what he’s got. Lately they have defended much better than they did at the start of the season. I don’t think they conceded a goal from open play for six games which is no mean feat in the Premier League.
“January is then always a hard time to buy players because the good teams don’t want to sell their best players and then you go further down the league and you have to pay over the odds because everybody wants to stay up. I don’t think we will see any players coming into Liverpool. There might be one or two going out, but then in the summer, especially if Can goes – you’ve got to get a holding midfielder, a centre back and maybe even a goalkeeper.”
