Former Rangers and Manchester United defender Henning Berg wants the vacant manager’s job at Ibrox, according to a report.

The Daily Record report that the Norwegian defender has applied to replace Pedro Caixinha after leaving Hungarian side Videoton earlier this year.

The Gers are looking for a new boss after sacking Pedro Caixinha three weeks ago and former Rangers defender Berg apparently wants to return to the club where he ended his playing career and help restore them to the peak of Scottish football.

After hanging up his boots in 2004, Berg almost immediately went into coaching and took his first managerial post little more than a year later when he was appointed manager of Lyn in his homeland.

After taking Lyn to third in the Norwegian league, Berg was approached by Lillestrom where he would go on to spend three years as boss.

A 57-day spell with Blackburn Rovers followed before Berg headed to Poland to take charge of Legia Warsaw.

The Norwegian won the Polish title in his first full season – and beat Celtic 6-1 in Champions League qualifying before being expelled for fielding an ineligible player – before being sacked in 2015 after failing to win the title.

Berg wasn’t out of the game for long though and quickly popped up in Hungary with Videoton.

The former Norway international was sacked after a single season after losing the title on the final day of the season.

Football Insider verdict: There must be something in the water today. Henning Berg, Gus Poyet and Tim Sherwood have all came out and say they want the Rangers job within 12 hours each other leaving Rangers fans completely underwhelmed. Berg has some positives to taking over but his lack of experience of coaching in Britain – other than 57 days with Blackburn – leaves a question mark of his suitability given Rangers want a manager with experience of British football. Can’t see Rangers pursuing Berg as a replacement for Caixinha.
