'Lovely gesture' - Brown reveals message sent to him by Rangers star

Former Scotland boss Craig Brown has revealed Rangers star Jamie Murphy sent him a message after making his international debut to thank him for showing “belief” in Murphy as a young player at Motherwell.

Brown was manager at Fir Park when Murphy broke into the first-team a decade ago and the 28-year-old wanted to pass on his thanks after coming off the bench against Costa Rica last week.

Murphy has been a vital player for the Gers after completing a loan move from Brighton in January and is expected to complete a permanent move in the summer.

“It was a lovely gesture, a brilliant touch. I’m guessing I wouldn’t be the only one of his former coaches he contacted,” Brown said, as quoted by the Scottish Sun.

“After my Scotland debut I just wanted to say thanks for your help and belief in me in the early years of my career,” Murphy’s message read, according to Brown

“It’s always been appreciated and hopefully I can go and get a few more caps.”

The winger has scored three times and contributed six assists in 11 appearances for the Gers since his January switch from Premier League Brighton.

Murphy will return to Fir Park this weekend for the first time since leaving the Steelmen to join Sheffield United when the Gers take on Motherwell on Saturday.

Football Insider verdict:

Murphy’s message to Brown is a classy touch from a player who handles himself fantastically well. The winger deserved a cap long before now and his performances for Rangers will hopefully only be the start for the 28-year-old at Ibrox. The return to Fir Park this weekend is a great chance for the former Brighton star to help the Gers get back to winning ways and build some momentum before they face Celtic at Hampden next month for a place in the Scottish Cup final. Helping the Gers to the final would no doubt go a long way to helping Murphy secure his place in the national squad.
