Fosu-Mensah to Rangers: Pundit drops transfer verdict after shock freeze-out

Rangers transfer target Timothy Fosu-Mensah has raised concerns with his lack of activity since leaving Bayer Leverkusen at the end of last season.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson questioned why the 27-year-old is still without a club six months after he was released on a free by the Bundesliga outfit.

Given his status as a free agent and availability outside of the transfer window, the deal is an appealing one financially, but concerns have lingered about his fitness.

Last season, he failed to make a single appearance for Leverkusen after suffering from a serious knee injury early in the season which affected his match-fitness.

As a result, he was let go following the expiry of his contract, and no club have been willing to take the punt on his full recovery so far.

However, Rangers are now showing an interest in bringing him to Ibrox in an attempt to resolve their issues with squad depth in their defence.

Fosu-Mensah is capable of playing in any position across the back line, as well as at defensive midfield, and has plenty of experience in the Premier League and Bundesliga.

Rangers warned off of Timothy Fosu-Mensah deal after new twist

Rangers are looking to sign a new defender before the transfer window closes, but have been limited by their financial restrictions and could now look to bring in a free agent.

However, doubt has been cast over whether Fosu-Mensah is the right man at this time given his injury issues and the fact no other club has been willing to gamble on the move.

He left Leverkusen at the end of last season and is still without a club,” he told Football Insider.

“I mean, there’s a reason these players are without a club.

“He’s 27, he should be fit and playing. You don’t go this long without a club.

“There’s clearly something missing with him, you would expect somebody of his age to be kicking on and playing regularly.

“It makes you wonder why nobody’s picked him up.

“Not just Premier League clubs, but Championship clubs, League One clubs even, but it’s the same across Europe teams have had problems in those areas.

“Why has nobody touched him in the last six months before the window opened?

“You can sign a free agent whenever you like. If players aren’t attached to a club, you can sign them.

“So he’s been in that situation since the end of last season and nobody’s touched him. My question is, why not?”
