Fosun to ‘surprise and disappoint’ Wolves fans with January transfer window plan

Wolves have endured a miserable first half of the season after failing to win a single game in the Premier League.

Wolves fans protested against Fosun International – the club’s ownership group – in their 4-1 defeat against Manchester United on Monday (8 December).

Rob Edwards has so far failed to turn the club’s fortunes around since being appointed as manager last month after deciding to leave Middlesbrough.

Football Insider revealed on 12 November Wolves were prepared to back Edwards in the January transfer window depending on their position in the Premier League.

However, the West Midlands side currently sit rock bottom of the top-flight table and are 13 points from safety after 15 games.

Wolves owners to sanction January sales

Former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson exclusively told Football Insider Wolves are likely to be focusing on sales in January as they prepare for relegation to the Championship.

Football Insider revealed on 2 December Wolves will lose more than £60m in revenue if they are relegated this season.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Borson said: “I think they are most likely to be thinking about whether they need to sell, as opposed to buy, which will surprise and disappoint probably some Wolves fans.

“I think we get to the point where they are too far gone. I mean, we’ll know more by the opening of the window when we’ll have a much better feel. They’ve got four games before 1 January.

“Clearly, if they win the next four and they give themselves some points, then clearly they’re in the mix. But the likelihood is, by the time you get to 1 January, they are effectively relegated.

“In that scenario, they have to start planning immediately for how they’re going to comply with the financial rules that are going to come from that.”

Wolves have spent the past seven years in the Premier League, having been promoted under Nuno Espirito Santo in 2018.

Wolves set for ‘survival mode’ as crushing blow on the cards

Borson insisted Wolves will enter “survival mode” if they feel they can’t stay up once the January window opens.

“The bottom line is, if by 1 January they can’t survive, they’re going to be looking at sale sales, and they’re going to be looking at survival mode because the whole picture changes for the club,” said Borson.

“It’s not been run as a club designed for the Championship. They’ve been in the Premier League for a number of years. All the costs, all the set-up, it’s all Premier League. It will be a big issue if they were to then get relegated on that basis.

“They didn’t fly as high as Leicester, but it will be a similar sort of situation. It’s very difficult to just immediately switch from relatively long-term Premier League football to Championship and what that means in terms of revenue.”

Wolves are set to take on Arsenal, Liverpool and Man United away from home before the January window opens, while their only fixture at Molineux sees them take on Brentford.
