Rangers goalkeeper Jak Alnwick revealed the Light Blues were buzzing after the 2-1 Scottish Premiership win over Hearts on Sunday – but admitted the Gers face “four cup finals” before the end of the season as the try to secure second in the league table.
Alnwick made only his second league start for the Gers after a shoulder injury forced Wes Foderingham out of the side and the shot-stopper was barely troubled by the Jambos.
The former Port Vale keeper thinks there is still a “lot of work” for the Ibrox side to do before the end of the season as they returned to second in the table on goal difference.
“The lads are getting a bit of a buzz after that in the dressing room, there is still a lot of work to do and we need to keep putting everything right and keep moving forward,” Alnwick told RangersTV.
“We have four cup finals until the end of the season and we will see where it takes us.”
The Gers travel to Celtic Park next weekend in what could be a title-clincher for their bitter rivals and the Light Blues will be hoping to put their longest run without a win over the Hoops to bed and delay their party.
Goals from Jason Cummings and Daniel Candeias secured the win for the Gers as they gave manager Graeme Murty the sort of reaction he will have been hoping for after last weekend.
Alnwick could be set to feature in next weekend’s Old Firm clash if Foderingham doesn’t get over his shoulder injury in time to face Brendan Rodgers’ side.
Football Insider verdict
Although it is the sort of game Rangers should be winning most time, it is good to see a positive reaction from the players at the result after last weekend and the ensuing turmoil. The Gers need to be much more clinical in these four ‘cup finals’ though and kill games off if they are going to take second in the table. With a massive game next weekend, a win against the Jambos was critical for the Gers and will hopefully give them something to build on this week ahead of the trip to Celtic Park next Sunday.
In other Rangers news, Graeme Murty was left raving over this from last weekend’s Celtic clash.
