Four signings agreed: Pundit claims Newcastle United have just saved £150m+ in transfer fees

Newcastle United have saved hundreds of millions after fixing their defence over the last two transfer windows.

That’s according to former Hibernian striker Tam McManus, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the Toon’s recruitment.

Newcastle have signed four defenders as well as Nick Pope since the Saudi-backed takeover of the club was completed in October 2021.

Kieran Trippier, Dan Burn, Matt Targett and Sven Botman have all arrived at the club and helped to give Eddie Howe’s side a far more solid defence.

Heading into this weekend’s fixtures, Newcastle still boasted the Premier League’s meanest defence, conceding just 11 goals in 14 games.

McManus insists Newcastle have saved themselves over £100million due to their savvy recruiting.

“Still the Premier League’s best defence, not bad considering where they were a year ago,” McManus told Football Insider‘s Ben Wild.

“They were conceding three or four goals a game under Bruce. Now it’s clean sheets more often than not.

“If you were to think about how much money it would take to change a defence that is bottom of the table into one that could challenge for the Champions League, how much are we talking, £100million?

“£150million? More? They have managed to do it for what, half of that? It’s just another tick in the box for Newcastle.

“Have they made a bad signing yet? It must give the fans so much confidence that the club know what they are doing in the transfer market.”

Trippier, Botman and Burn have all heavily featured for Newcastle this season.

Targett has been relegated to the bench with Burn taking his position at left-back.
