Frank Lampard shock Coventry exit mooted after Sunderland loss: ‘Just incredible’

Frank Lampard’s potential exit after Coventry City suffered a painful Championship play-off defeat to Sunderland has caused disbelief.

The Sky Blues were just seconds from heading to a penalty shootout at the Stadium of Light on Tuesday, 13 May, having pulled themselves back into the tie thanks to Ephron Mason-Clark.

However, with Man United star Amad Diallo in attendance for Sunderland’s clash, Dan Ballard rose highest during the added time of extra time to head the Black Cats into the final at Wembley Stadium to face Sheffield United.

Despite the heartbreak, fans have quickly fallen in love with Lampard after taking Coventry from a relegation-threatened side to battling for promotion to the Premier League for the 2025/26 season.

Due to those achievements in the West Midlands, Darren Bent and Andy Goldstein discussed the possibility of Lampard being offered another job in the top tier of English football, to the amazement of the former.

Frank Lampard backed for Premier League job after Coventry City heartbreak

Speaking live on talkSPORT (14 May, 5:11pm), Goldstein asked: “Has he done enough to earn another PL job?” to which Bent replied: “That’s just incredible.

“He’s not been there that long, and we’re already talking about a Premier League move. If I’m Frank, I’m staying exactly where I am right now.”

Goldstein interrupted, saying: No, you’re not… You can have another season in the Championship, or you can be the manager of, I don’t know, Bournemouth…”

Bent continued: “No, I’m staying where I’m at. He’s been at Chelsea, a big, big club, Derby [County], also a big club, and Everton, and it hasn’t worked for him yet. Stop jumping ship.

“He’s at a good football club, with a good group of players. They’ll lose one or two, but the expectation next season will be to get into the play-offs. Why would you jump ship?”

Coventry City to brace for difficult transfer window after play-off heartbreak

Football Insider verdict

Lampard has previously refused to rule out a Coventry exit, despite only taking over from Mark Robins in November, but his name in the sporting world could certainly make something happen.

However, supporters might be more fearful of potential exits on the pitch ahead of another season in the Championship, with Haji Wright, Ellis Simms, Jack Rudoni, Bobby Thomas all experiencing incredible seasons.

While the summer transfer window will be a worrying few weeks for Coventry fans, the team will still be expected to be back in a similar position next season, especially if Lampard is still in charge.

Although the 46-year-old’s spells with Everton and Chelsea were not incredibly successful, the supporters clearly believe in his abilities and are ready to back him for another season in the Championship.

A move to the Premier League should not be completely off the table this summer, but with Andoni Iraola showing zero signs of leaving Bournemouth, the Vitality Stadium is unlikely to be a destination.
