‘Frank Lampard sorry for January transfer window move at Coventry’

Coventry manager Frank Lampard has apologised for a late January transfer window move, reports CoventryLive.

Fabio Tavares joined Burton Albion on loan until the end of the season, having only made two appearances in all competitions this season.

The Portuguese winger played just over an hour against Bristol City in the Carabao Cup (13 August), under previous manager Mark Robins, and then featured for 19 minutes against Barnsley on 1 February under new boss, Lampard.

Despite featuring regularly in matchday squads, Tavares has not been called upon, and is out of contract in the summer.

When asked about his decision to let Tavares leave the club on loan, Lampard said, via CoventryLive: “He deserves to go and play. He trains brilliantly, with a smile on his face. He’s a great teammate and he’s not playing, and I apologised to him for not giving him any minutes.”

While Tavares was the only outgoing for the Sky Blues in January, Lampard strengthened his squad with three deals in the winter transfer window.

Matt Grimes joined in a permanent deal from Swansea, while Jack Burroughs and Ryan Howley joined on loan from Kilmarnock and Ayr United respectively.

One surprise of the transfer window, was seeing Lampard not make the most of his connections with former club Chelsea when it came to recruitment.

Mason Mount in action for Manchester United
Mason Mount thrived on loan at Derby under Frank Lampard.

During his previous spell in the Championship, whilst in charge of Derby, Lampard took Mason Mount and Fikayo Tomori on-loan and propelled his team into the playoffs.

Sam Rak-Sakyi was linked with a move to the Sky Blues, but no deal was agreed between the two teams in January.
