Frenkie de Jong: Pundit can't believe Man United could seal player exchange deal after update

Noel Whelan has claimed Barcelona’s fans would be “fuming” if Frenkie de Jong was swapped for Man United pair Scott McTominay and Anthony Elanga this summer.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed McTominay, 25, would not be “an enticing enough prospect” for the Catalan giants.

According to journalist Gerard Romero (30 April), Barcelona are interested in Man United pair McTominay and Elanga as Erik ten Hag eyes De Jong as one of his first summer signings.

McTominay has made 35 appearances across all competitions this term, while Elanga has scored eight goals in his breakthrough season at Old Trafford.

De Jong, who played under Ten Hag at Ajax, has notched nine goal contributions in 44 total appearances this term.

Whelan insisted the potential swap deal “just doesn’t seem right”.

“McTominay has had a decent couple of seasons at Man United, but I don’t think he’s stood out massively,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.

“There have been games where he’s looked incredible, but that isn’t saying much when you consider where they are.

“He wants to work hard and I like his attitude – but would he be an enticing enough prospect for Barcelona? Probably not.

“I don’t think I can see a swap deal for Frenkie de Jong happening. That just doesn’t seem right.

“I think Barcelona fans would be fuming if that were to go through.”

Man United sit sixth in the Premier League and are likely to be playing Europa League football next term.

The Red Devils are in desperate need of midfield reinforcements.

Paul Pogba, Nemanja Matic, Jesse Lingard, and Juan Mata are all set to leave when their contracts expire next month.
