Frimpong and Sane react to Florian Wirtz’s emotional message after Liverpool move
Jeremie Frimpong and Leroy Sane are among those that have reacted after new Liverpool signing Florian Wirtz penned an emotional message on social media.
Liverpool always seemed likely to make a high-profile addition to their squad this summer, even after a comfortable Premier League title win, and Wirtz was a priority target for Arne Slot.
The 22-year-old had been a star in the Bundesliga for a number of years, and became one of the most highly-rated young midfielders in the world after firing Bayer Leverkusen to an unprecedented unbeaten league title in 2024.
Football Insider revealed on 24 May that Liverpool were making progress towards a huge deal to sign Wirtz after meetings with him and his family, despite serious interest in his services from German giants Bayern Munich.
Wirtz officially made the move to Anfield on 20 June for an initial fee of £100million [Sky Sports], and explained that he was “very happy and proud” to be making the move to the Reds [Liverpool].

Wirtz pens emotional final message to Leverkusen fans
Wirtz’ move to Liverpool will have been a tough one to make for him, despite joining one of the biggest clubs in the world, as he played for Leverkusen for five years after arriving as a 16-year-old from FC Koln in 2020.
The German international made 197 appearances for their senior side, and clearly built a strong connection to the club and it’s fans, as he returned to the BayArena to make a video addressing them for the final time on Instagram on Monday (14 July).
In the video, Wirtz admitted that he “could never have imagined” the experiences he would have at Leverkusen, and that he would “never forget” the support they gave him, and he accompanied the video with a caption, saying: “A special journey comes to an end. You will always be in my heart & I wish you all the best for the future. Thank you (Bayer Leverkusen).”
His message was reacted to with likes from Jeremie Frimpong, who also made the move from Leverkusen to Liverpool this summer, German international Leroy Sane, Giorgi Mamardashvili, Callum Hudson-Odoi and Emi Buendia.
Liverpool will not stop at only signing Wirtz this summer
Football Insider verdict
While Wirtz is not the Reds’ only high-profile summer acquisition so far, with Frimpong signed and Milos Kerkez brought in from Bournemouth, his acquisition is in a league of it’s own in terms of money spent and star quality.
The German playmaker has commanded a fee that could make him the most expensive Premier League player ever, if his £16m add-on fees are also met, and that is a testament to how Liverpool are not planning on slowing down under Slot next term.

It does not look as if they want to stop at signing just one player of his ilk and status this summer, however, after reports emerged on Tuesday (15 July) that Liverpool have made an approach to sign Newcastle’s Alexander Isak [The Athletic].
No formal bid has yet been made, but the Reds want to do a deal for the Swedish international that would cost them around £120m, and if they get that over the line, then it would be very hard to look past them for a successive title in 2025/26.
