Frimpong, Trippier react to Man City star Phil Foden after Arsenal transfer claim
Jeremie Frimpong and Kieran Trippier reacted to Phil Foden’s recent update as Man City continue their journey in the Club World Cup.
The 25-year-old broke a horrendous streak of 20 matches without a goal during the 2-0 win over Wydad Casablanca, also setting up Jeremy Doku’s goal in the club’s opening victory of the tournament.
However, with Pep Guardiola making plenty of changes for the second game, especially after Rico Lewis’ sending off against Wydad, the England international found himself on the bench on Monday, 23 June.
While he came on at half-time, goals came from Ilkay Gundogan, Claudio Echeverri, Erling Haaland, Oscar Bobb, and Rayan Cherki in a 6-0 win over Al-Ain before facing Juventus for the final group stage game.
Given his disappointing lack of output last season, Mikel Arteta and Arsenal have been tipped to sign Foden, but any move to the Emirates seems very unlikely to materialise based on current evidence.
Phil Foden key as Man City’s Club World Cup campaign continues
Taking to Instagram (23 June), Foden wrote: “Round of 16,” with padlock and muscle emojis.
The post gained likes from teammate Vitor Reis, Liverpool’s Jeremie Frimpong, and Newcastle United’s Kieran Trippier.
Pep Guardiola to use Club World Cup as launchpad for next season
Football Insider verdict
While the Citizens put together a run of 10 league matches without a defeat towards the end of the 2024/25 season, only just qualifying for the Champions League has left many disappointed.
Guardiola will be the most disappointed of them all, but with moves already made for Cherki, Tijjani Reijnders, and Rayan Ait-Nouri, the Catalan means business this summer.
He will want to avoid a repeat of last season, being knocked out of multiple competitions at early stages and losing the FA Cup final to Crystal Palace, and City are making steps in the right direction.

While it was a difficult season for Foden, personally, Football Insider understands that the Man City star could be given the chance to step up in the wake of Kevin De Bruyne‘s move to Napoli.
The Club World Cup is giving the Citizens the perfect chance to gel before the 2025/26 campaign kicks off, and that will be needed to battle Liverpool for the Premier League title.
With Frimpong being joined by Florian Wirtz at Anfield, the Reds are already the team to beat next season, and City are doing everything right to become the team they have been for the last decade.
