‘From What I’ve Heard…’ – Exclusive: McAvennie in awe of ‘Amazing’ Rangers ’20 signing

Frank McAvennie has heaped praise on the recruitment team at Rangers for the signing of Leon Balogun on a free.

The former Celtic and St Mirren striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, was impressed by the 32-year-old’s “amazing” defending in the Old Firm on Saturday.

Balogun helped Steven Gerrard’s side move 19 points clear in the Scottish Premiership last weekend by keeping a clean sheet in a 1-0 win over Celtic at Ibrox.

The Nigeria international, signed on a free from Wigan Athletic in the summer, has been an integral part of a defence that has recorded a league-high 18 shut-outs this season.

McAvennie claimed that Steven Gerrard’s work on the training pitch with his defence is paying dividends this season.

“He was amazing,” he told Football Insider.

“Listen, I do not watch too much of Rangers but from what I have heard from a lot of people talking, Balogun, he is a fantastic player.

“And another one they have got from the bargain basement – Balogun on a free, Goldson and Katic for only a few million each.

“Steven Gerrard has just worked them, worked them, worked them. They have drilled them into a well-oiled machined now. You can make good players into a great team.

Speaking after the win, Balogun told club media: “This season is still long – although this was a big and important step for us to make.

“Complacency is a killer. We were maybe complacent in the first-half and we all saw how that could hurt us.”
