Gabriel Jesus could explode in new role at Arsenal as fresh details emerge - pundit

Noel Whelan has backed Gabriel Jesus to shine at Arsenal as Mikel Arteta looks to revolutionise his attack in the 2022/23 season.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the 25-year-old will be playing a different role to now-departed strikers Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette.

Football Insider revealed on Saturday (25 June) that Jesus will complete a £45million move from Arsenal within days after undergoing a medical.

As per Squawka (26 June), the Brazillian has scored all of his 58 top-flight goals from inside the box – the most of any player in Premier League history.

Whelan insisted Arteta will look to exploit Jesus’ prolific record by preventing him from drifting out of position.

He told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury: “If Jesus is going to be playing through the middle for Arsenal, it could be that he is asked to play a slightly different role for Arteta.

“I think he’ll be looked at as a number nine. Arteta won’t want him drifting into the wide areas or into that number ten role.

“If you’re going to go out and buy a player like Gabriel Jesus, you need him running off the shoulder of defenders. That’s where we’ve seen him score so many goals – just by being in that six-yard box.

“It’ll be a different role than what we’ve seen the likes of Aubameyang and Lacazette do in the past.”

Jesus, whose Man City contract was set to expire in June 2023, will sign a lucrative five-year contract at the Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal will play Europa League football in the 2022/23 season after finishing fifth.
