Gareth Southgate has already hinted ‘invaluable’ Man United player could become key staff member
Ruben Amorim is at risk of losing his role as Manchester United’s head coach, and Gareth Southgate has been linked as a potential replacement.
Despite the awful form United are in this season, Amorim wants to sign a new goalkeeper in January as he doesn’t trust Altay Bayindir or Senne Lammens after sending Andre Onana on loan to Trabzonspor.
Former Manchester United chief scout Mick Brown says Gareth Southgate could replace Amorim if the Portuguese coach does get sacked this season.
The club appears aimless, and Sir Jim Ratcliffe has already made five major mistakes since his takeover of Man Utd in December 2023, with many of the opinion that failing to fire and replace Amorim is now a key metric by which his time at Old Trafford will be judged.

Gareth Southgate linked with replacing Ruben Amorim at Man United
Amid the mounting pressure on United to fire Ruben Amorim, a number of managers have been linked with the job. Crystal Palace’s Oliver Glasner has been linked with becoming the manager of Man United after his incredible work with the London club.
Former Chelsea and Liverpool star, Joe Cole, believes ex-England boss Gareth Southgate would make for an excellent replacement for Amorim.
Speaking live on TNT Sports, Cole said: “He [Amorim] was the bright young spark, people were talking about him like he was the messiah coming into Manchester United and would sort everything out. That’s how high his stock was when he left Lisbon.
“So, he’s clearly a good manager as well, but the mix and the blend of the whole situation, I think it needs a culture change. I thought Gareth Southgate was the perfect man for the job at the state it was in terms of building culture, understanding the club, understanding the league, understanding the players, working with Jim Ratcliffe and people like that, and they went with Amorim, and it doesn’t look like it’s working.”
Tom Heaton would benefit most from Southgate’s potential appointment
During Southgate’s spell as manager of the England national team, he invited Tom Heaton to join the squad for the 2024 Euros.
At the time, Southgate said that Heaton would play an “invaluable role on the training pitch” and “add to the positive environment we are always looking to create.”
Currently part of the Man United squad, it would make perfect sense for Southgate to appoint Heaton to his backroom staff.
The 39-year-old is obviously highly rated in terms of his personality and experience and would also offer the new coaching staff invaluable knowledge of how things have been at the club over the last four years since he rejoined the club.
Despite spending five years at the club between 2005 and 2010 and his current four-year spell, Heaton has never made an appearance for Man United.
Yet, if he can be involved in positive change in leadership at Old Trafford, he could make the impact he has likely always hoped to be involved in at the club.
