Garry Monk delivers verdict on new Leeds signing ahead of Huddersfield clash

Garry Monk has revealed his delight after Leeds completed a deal that will see Pontus Jansson join the club permanently at the end of the season.

Jansson, 25, who is on loan at Elland Road from Serie A side Torino, has signed a contract with the former Champions League side until the summer of 2020.

Speaking ahead of Sunday’s Yorkshire derby against Huddersfield, manager Monk explained that the permanent signing of Jansson was always expected but is nonetheless pleased it has been sorted.

“Pontus agreeing a permanent deal is great news,” Monk said, as quoted by Leeds’ official Twitter account. “That was always the plan.”

Jansson has been in wonderful form for the Yorkshire giants since confirming a season-long loan in the summer from Torino.

Making 23 appearances in all competitions, the 6ft 5in colossus has played an integral part in helping Leeds keep 10 clean sheets as well as finding the back of the net three times.

Scoring against Blackburn in the 89th minute on Wednesday night saw Monk’s side earn a 2-1 win at Ewood Park, keeping them in a lofty fourth place in the Championship table.

Striking a formidable partnership in defence with Kyle Bartley, Jansson has shown composure when in possession as well as being able to read an opponent’s mind in order to make multiple interceptions and break up attacking play.

With his future now sorted at Elland Road, Jansson is expected to start against Huddersfield on Sunday as Leeds look to steal a march on their playoff rivals with all three points.
