Gary Mabbutt: This is how Tottenham first teamer can improve
By Dominic Toner
Gary Mabbutt believes that Tottenham ace Eric Dier will “grow in stature” with more experience at club and international level.
The 23-year-old has been an important first-team player for Spurs since he signed in 2014 and has been a regular under Mauricio Pochettino.
He has been included in England’s 23-man squad during the international break and could feature in the friendly against Germany on Wednesday night.
Dier spent last season as a defensive midfielder for both club and country, but has dropped back into a centre-back position in Spurs’ back three system.
Former Spurs ace Mabbutt insists that Dier will continue to improve as he settles into the defensive role.

“Eric is still a young man and I believe the more experience he gains at club and international level, the more he’ll continue to grow in stature,” Mabbutt said, as quoted by the club’s official website. “When you play in other positions, you get that understanding of what players have to do in matches.”
Dier has joined his Spurs team-mates Dele Alli and Kyle Walker in the England squad, while injured pair Harry Kane and Danny Rose were unavailable for Gareth Southgate’s selection.
Southgate will be pleased to have the versatile Dier at his disposal, who could do a job in defence or midfield for the side.
The Spurs man has been part of a formidable back line alongside Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld this season.
They have the joint-best defensive record in the Premier League with just 21 goals conceded and have been backed up by goalkeeper Hugo Lloris behind them.
