Gary Mabbutt believes the so-called Wembley hoodoo surrounding Tottenham is “absolute nonsense”.
Former Spurs defender Mabbutt made a bold prediction by stating that Mauricio Pochettino’s side will win the FA Cup this season to prove that the club is not jinxed at the home of football.
The north London club have been playing their European games at Wembley this season with work being done on building a new stadium by their current home White Hart Lane.
As a result, they played three Champions League encounters at England’s national stadium, including a Europa League tie.
They lost two of those matches, drawing one and picking up a narrow win against CSKA Moscow during the group stages of the CL in December.
Mabbutt did not agree with those thinking that his former side have bad luck when playing at Wembley.
“I’ve been frustrated this season with people talking about a Wembley jinx,” Mabbutt told the Daily Mail. “There were two poor performances at the start of the Champions League and that was it – it was nothing to do with a Wembley jinx.
“People building up the hoodoo of playing at Wembley, it’s absolute nonsense, and I think that will be proven this season because I’m quietly confident Tottenham will go on to win the FA Cup this year.”
Spurs are still in the FA Cup and they will play League One outfit Millwall during the quarter-final stages of the competition.
Neil Harris’ side beat two Premier League clubs on their way to this stage, firstly beating Bournemouth and then Leicester City.
Other teams remaining in the competition are Arsenal, Manchester United, Manchester City, Chelsea and non-league Lincoln.
City will host Championship promotion-chasers Huddersfield Town on Wednesday night after the reverse FA Cup fixture finished goalless.
