Gary O’Neil sack latest: Managers ‘reject Wolves job’ – Insider

Wolves’ ongoing issues behind the scenes have put top managers off taking over from Gary O’Neil should the club opt to dismiss him.

This is according to former Man United and Blackburn chief scout Mick Brown, who remains very well-connected within the game, as he exclusively told Football Insider that managers will expect to be backed in the transfer market given the team’s weaknesses.

Despite a 2-1 defeat to West Ham on 9 December, in a game which had been billed as his final chance, O’Neil is set to remain in the job for the clash with Ipswich on 14 December.

The boss will be given the opportunity to turn around their dismal start to the season despite growing pressure from the stands at Molineux.

However, Brown has insisted that O’Neil has remained in the job as a result of the lack of interest in his position given the financial issues they have faced.

As the manager highlighted in his post-West Ham interviews, an alarming number of star players have been allowed to leave the club since 2023 with little effort to replace them.

Max Kilman, Pedro Neto, Matheus Nunes, Ruben Neves, Nathan Collins, Conor Coady, Raul Gimenez and Adama Traore have all been let go during his tenure.

Meanwhile, Wolves’ financial issues have limited their spending in the transfer market and they are not expected to be among the busier clubs in January.

Brown, who has a wealth of experience working with top-level managers including the likes of Sir Alex Ferguson, Ron Atkinson and David Moyes, insisted that bosses have been put off of the job by the lack of backing they would receive.

I’ve heard a few managers have been put off by it,” he told Football Insider.

“Take somebody like Graham Potter as an example, but the same goes for anybody, he would have seen their games and he’ll know the strengths and weaknesses of the team.

“So he would already have an idea of the players and positions that need strengthening.

“When he speaks to the board, he’ll ask what sort of funds are available to make those improvements.

“He’d then be told how limited they are in the market, for whatever reason, and that, nine times out of ten, would make him reject the offer if it arrived.

“They’ve struggled so far this season because there are weaknesses in their team. If those weaknesses can’t be addressed, why would any manager want to take on that job?

“I think that’s probably played a part in the reason Gary O’Neil is still there.

“I’m not saying it will be impossible for them to find a new manager, but if they’re competing with other clubs, they’re not likely to come out on top.”
