Gary O’Neil to Southampton update and latest on Russell Martin return

Southampton are advancing in talks with Gary O’Neil about becoming their new manager, sources have told Football Insider.

O’Neil was in discussions to become the new Wolves boss last week, but eventually withdrew from the process with Rob Edwards now close to agreeing terms.

Will Still was sacked by Southampton on Sunday (2 November), and the club currently sit 17th in the Championship following a wretched start from the season

Sources say that talks with O’Neil are now advancing quickly, with the former Wolves manager favourite to take over from Still, although there are also whispers of strong interest from Norwich City following the dismissal of Liam Manning.

Southampton make decision on Russell Martin

On Monday (3 November), Football Insider revealed that Southampton would approach Russell Martin regarding a sensational switch back to the south coast.

However, sources say that the support for the 39-year-old in the boardroom is now not as strong as it was a week ago.

Martin was sacked by Rangers last month in what was his first job since being dismissed by the Saints in December 2024.

The former Swansea City boss had a wretched tenure at Ibrox and was effectively hounded out of the club by the fans.

Southampton have alternative managerial option

Meanwhile, Southampton’s interim manager Tonda Eckert is in the race to get the job on a permanent basis, sources have told Football Insider.

Eckert led the Saints to a 2-1 win against QPR in midweek, before his side beat Sheffield Wednesday 3-1 on Saturday (8 November).

The 32-year-old’s chances of securing the full-time role will depend on how he performs during his interim period, and a string of positive results could land him the job.
