Gary O’Neil ‘will be sacked’ by Wolves – Insider

Gary O’Neil “will be sacked” by Wolves if he cannot make the correct adjustments following their 4-0 defeat to Everton at Goodison Park.

This is according to former Man United and Sunderland assistant manager Mick Brown, who remains very well-connected within the game, as he exclusively told Football Insider that the manager must make changes to his style of play.

A 4-0 defeat against Everton last time out saw their defensive woes continue, having now conceded four in back-to-back games after the 4-2 loss to Bournemouth.

After 14 Premier League games so far this season, O’Neil’s side have shipped 36 goals – the most in the division – handing them a -14 goals difference.

The only side with a worse goal-difference are last-placed Southampton, who’s well-documented defensive issues have also gathered criticism.

Wolves’ 4-1 win against Fulham at Craven Cottage hinted at a return to form, but constant defensive errors inspired by the style of play have now cost them further points.

As a result, Brown has insisted that refusing to make changes in an attempt to turn their fortunes around will be O’Neil’s downfall.

Gary O’Neil pressure grows after Everton defeat

Brown previously told Football Insider that ex-West Ham boss David Moyes would be in line to replace O’Neil should he lose his job in the near future.

The former coach and chief scout, who has a wealth of experience working with top managers including the likes of Sir Alex Ferguson and Ron Atkinson, insisted that if results down see a rapid turnaround, changes will be made.

The pressure on O’Neil is definitely growing,” he told Football Insider.

“It looked like they might have bounced back with that result against Fulham, but then they start losing games and making silly errors again.

“When you’re at the bottom of the table, it’s all well and good to say you want to keep playing your style of football, but you can’t do that if you keep losing games.

“The first thing to do is to stop losing games, it doesn’t matter how you do it.

“That’s on the manager, so if he can’t make those changes for the better of the team, he will be sacked.

“Sticking to a certain style will be his downfall because nothing will change.

“If you keep doing the thing that’s causing you to lose games, you’ll just keep losing games.

“They concede so many goals, and I know when you’re in that position everything seems to go wrong, but there’s only so long you can blame bad luck.

“It’s a results business at the end of the day, and if you’re not getting results, clubs tend to look for somebody else who will.”
