Gelhardt facing 'very frustrating' injury lay-off after Leeds training ground reveal - pundit

Alex McLeish has admitted Joe Gelhardt faces a “very frustrating” comeback from injury at Leeds United.

The former Scotland manager, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted he fears the 19-year-old may be out longer than expected after the initial prognosis.

As quoted by Leeds Live on Sunday (9 January), Marcelo Bielsa confirmed Gelhardt will be out of action for “three to four weeks” after suffering an ankle injury in training.

The Argentine confirmed the striker suffered the injury when a teammate fell on him.

McLeish admitted short-term injuries can be among the most frustrating for a player.

He suggested the layoff would test Gelhardt’s mental strength ahead of comeback.

McLeish told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “For young guys, there’s a lot of strain mentally and physically in a league such as the Premier League.

“Sometimes they can’t shake off injuries and they pick them up every now and again.

“For him to pick it up so early after a really promising start, scoring a goal in one of the games, you were thinking onwards and upwards.

“Unfortunately, these little injuries. they can have you dangling there. They’re very frustrating, two or three weeks. It’s easier to cope mentally if you know you’re going to be out for three months.

“You think you’re going to be ready for next week and then you’re not. Then you think you’re going to be ready for the week after and it’s frustrating again. He could be out longer than expected.

“That’s what these little niggly injuries do to you. He’s young and he’ll probably be developing.”

Gelhardt has played nine times for Leeds so far this season.

He scored his first goal against Chelsea last month.
