Gerrard tipped to lure 'biggest names in the world' to Aston Villa - pundit

Frank McAvennie insists Steven Gerrard can attract “some of the biggest players in the world” to Aston Villa.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Villains striker admitted he is expecting big things from the recently-appointed boss.

Gerrard, 41, became Aston Villa’s new manager on Thursday morning, leaving Rangers after three and a half years.

On 5 August, Marca reported Villa have the highest net spend of any club in Europe over the past three years.

McAvennie insists with this financial might and Gerrard’s standing in the game, Villa will be able to sign some of the biggest names in world football.

“Gerrard will be given the chance to make his own signings,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild

“It might sound daft, but he can attract some of the biggest names in the world, it’s Steven Gerrard.

“No offence to Dean Smith because I still don’t think he should have been sacked but maybe he didn’t carry much respect with the lads who came in during the summer.

“Gerrard is a name that commands respect. He will have that respect from day one.

“That works with transfers as well. How many players went to Rangers because of Gerrard?

“I think we will see the same thing at Villa, just on a bigger scale.”

Aston Villa sit 16th in the Premier League and two points outside the relegation zone after five straight losses.

Gerrard’s first game is a home clash against Brighton after the international break.
