Gerrard tipped to make Aribo his first Aston Villa signing in ‘brilliant’ £10m move – pundit

Frank McAvennie insists Joe Aribo could “definitely” follow Steven Gerrard to Aston Villa.

The former Villains striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claims only a few Rangers players can make the jump to the Premier League.

Rangers announced Gerrard had joined Aston Villa on Thursday morning, bringing an end to his three and a half years at Ibrox.

A Rangers source has told Football Insider (19 October) that the club will demand a £10million-plus transfer fee for Aribo, 25, in January.

Asked if there is anyone from Rangers who could be Gerrard’s first Villa signing, McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild: “There are a few players who could make that jump.

“I would be very surprised if Gerrard didn’t sign at least one player from Rangers.

“I look at that squad and see a few players who could do it. Joe Aribo stands out to me.

“He’s young enough and has the talent to go down there and do well. £10million is it for him? That’s a good deal.

“Aribo could add that spark to the Villa midfield. They have a lot of quality players but they are struggling to create.

“I would imagine Aribo will be a relatively cheap signing Gerrard could get over the line.

“He could definitely follow Gerrard and it would be a brilliant move for him.”

Aston Villa sit 16th in the Premier League and two points outside the relegation zone after five straight losses.

Gerrard’s first game is a home clash against Brighton after the international break.
