Gerrard's ex-teammate suggests he could snub Aston Villa offer to stay at Rangers
Steven Gerrard has “unfinished business” at Rangers and it will be “really tough” for Aston Villa to convince him to move, according to Paul Robinson.
The ex-Spurs and England goalkeeper, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, is adamant his former teammate will manage in the Premier League soon but fears the timing is not right to leave Ibrox.
Aston Villa announced on Sunday that Smith had been sacked after five straight Premier League defeats.
A Villa source told Football Insider on Wednesday morning that the club are confident of appointing Gerrard, 41, as their new manager by Sunday after talks last night.
However, Robinson does not believe Gerrard’s appointment is a foregone conclusion.

“I think it will be a really tough for Villa to convince him to move at this stage of the season,” he told Football Insider.
“Steven Gerrard is really highly thought of as a player and manager now. His stock has risen.
“I thought Steven or Frank Lampard would have been perfect for Newcastle.
“It is going to be difficult to get him out of Rangers midway through the season though.
“I have no doubt whatsoever that Steven Gerrard will manage in the Premier League at some point. It will be at Liverpool or another club.
“Steven has unfinished business at Rangers. He will want to defend that title. The type of person he is, I can’t see it materialising. Football is a cut-throat business but Steven has a relationship with Rangers.
“You never say never but I don’t think the timing is right.”
