Gabriel Agbonlahor has tipped Illan Meslier to replace Kiko Casilla in the Leeds United starting XI against Newcastle United this evening.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Aston Villa and England striker claimed Marcelo Bielsa will want the young Frencham to return “as soon as possible”.
The 20-year-old stopper has missed the Whites last two games as he was out with an unspecified illness and was replaced with Casilla.
The one-time Spain international conceded four goals in his two appearances – including three against League Two Crawley Town in the FA Cup third round.
He retained his place against Brighton & Hove Albion on January 16 when the Seagulls ran out 1-0 winners as Leeds made it three consecutive defeats.
Meslier returned to training at the weekend and Bielsa confirmed in his pre-match press conference ahead of the trip to St. James’ Park that he had “resolved” his health issues.
Asked by Football Insider whether he expects Meslier to replace Casilla against Newcastle this evening, Agbonlahor said: “I think he will do.
“He’s been their first choice all season and I’m sure they’ll want to get him back in the side as soon as possible.
“He’s a good goalkeeper.”
Meslier had been an ever-present for the Yorkshire giants in the Premier League this term before the visit of Brighton earlier this month.
He has kept six clean sheets in his 17 league appearances – the same number as David de Gea, Lukasz Fabianski and Hugo Lloris and more than Alisson Becker.
