Darren Bent has tipped West Ham to “get rid” of defender Fabian Balbuena as he heads into the final year of his current contract.

The former Tottenham and England forward, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor, admits he would not be handing the 28-year-old a new deal if he was David Moyes.

The Paraguay international is one of five first-team players whose contract runs out in the summer of 2021, having signed a three-year deal on his arrival back in 2018.

However, Bent believes that Balbuena should be on his way as part of a significant shake up among the squad at the London Stadium.

Asked if the Irons should tie the centre-back to a new deal, Bent told Football Insider: “Balbuena? Get rid of him. To be fair to West Ham, I think they need to have a real good rebuild and have a real good think of what they’re going to do next.

“They’re being linked with so many players who are like that maverick-type player and I don’t think that’s what they need. I don’t think David Moyes would want that either.

“They need the likes of Jarrod Bowen, who’s gone in there and done really well, all action, all energy, works really hard – they need that type of player, someone who’s going to go in there and make a difference.”

Balbuena has played 39 times for the Hammers to date, battling it out with the likes of Issa Diop and Angelo Ogbonna for a place in the starting XI.

He has just 16 appearances across all competitions this season and has not played in the Premier League since the start of January.
