‘Get rid’ – Sheffield United fans rip into ‘shocking’ player after what he did vs West Brom
Sheffield United fans are fuming with Gustavo Hamer after he played poorly in their 2-0 defeat to West Brom on Friday night.
Hamer has been one of the Championship’s finest midfielders over the last few years at both Coventry City and Sheffield United.
He cost United £15million [The Athletic] to sign from the Sky Blues in 2023, and has registered 17 goals and 18 assists in 100 appearances for the South Yorkshire club in the two years since.
Leeds were linked to Hamer in the summer as he was expected to leave the Blades, but he stayed put past the deadline and has struggled to hit his previous heights under Ruben Selles or Chris Wilder.
The 28-year-old was handed a start by Wilder as United faced West Brom in Championship action on Friday (12 December) night, but he failed to make an impact and was subsequently slated by their fans.

Hamer struggled against West Brom in 2-0 loss
The Blades had won four of their previous six games before Friday night, but were made to pay at The Hawthorns after some sloppy defending and valuable missed chances.
Aune Heggebo poked the hosts in front just after the interval, with Karlan Grant extending their lead on the hour mark as it finished 2-0.
Hamer was culpable in the build-up to Grant’s well-taken goal as he tried, and failed, to flick the ball past a defender with United on the attack to allow West Brom to quickly counter and go two ahead.
The Dutchman ended a sub-par performance with just 73% pass accuracy from left midfield, while he missed a big chance in the first-half, had 14% cross accuracy, committed two fouls and won just two of his seven attempted duels.
United fans slam Hamer and urge club to cash in on him in January
Blades boss Wilder chose to rest in-form star Callum O’Hare in favour of starting Hamer on the left flank, and that proved to be a grave mistake as they were devoid of any flair in the final third.
Football Insider recently revealed that Leeds are planning to reignite their interest in Hamer in the new year, and many United supporters would seemingly not be against him leaving their club right now.
Taking to X after the game, one Blades fan posted to say: “Gustavo Hamer actually makes @SheffieldUnited worse (apart from odd moment of magic). Our best run of form came when he was out injured. Needs selling in Jan”
Another added: “If we don’t cash in on Hamer in Jan we’re stupid. He ain’t interested, his head gets turned constantly and his stock is falling by the day. Get rid.”
