Giorgos Giakoumakis ‘won’t like’ what expert has seen at Celtic

Frank McAvennie “doesn’t blame” Giorgos Giakoumakis for wanting to leave Celtic.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Hoops striker said Giakoumakis “won’t like” that Kyogo Furuhashi is the number one striker.

As shown on Viaplay Sports (14 January), the 28-year-old scored in added time for the Celts to secure their place in the League Cup final.

The striker was on the bench for the 2-0 victory over Kilmarnock and replaced Kyogo for the final 15 minutes of the semi-final clash.

According to Japanese outlet Sponichi, as relayed by the Daily Record (14 January), the Greece international has agreed terms with Urawa Red Diamonds.

Giakoumakis is believed to be ready to undergo a medical with the J-League side ahead of a potential move.

The striker’s Parkhead contract runs until 2026 but could quit this month after talks over a new contract stalled due to concerns over his salary.

McAvennie understands why Giakoumakis is keen on a move away from Glasgow.

“Kyogo is number one and he will not like that,” he told Football Insider.

“I do not blame players wanting to go if it is because they are not playing. I get that they want to play every game.

“I think Giakoumakis and Kyogo have done well flitting in and out, it is just unfortunate Giakoumakis has missed a few chances. His luck is not there.

“He has not had the best of luck. I can’t see him going anywhere much better than Japan.”

In other news, a Celtic expert has told Giorgos Giakoumakis to finalise English club move as terms agreed.
