Giroud urges senior Arsenal man to follow suit and sign new contract
By Emma Sanders
Olivier Giroud has admitted he signed a new contract with Arsenal in the hope that Arsene Wenger will also extend his stay.
The striker signed a new deal with the club which could keep him at the Emirates until 2020 and while he stated he was “very happy,” he admitted his decision was affected by speculation over Wenger’s future.
The Arsenal manager’s contract runs out in the summer and there has yet to be any indication that he will sign a new deal despite several players expressing their desire for him to stay on.
Giroud’s comments come just days after Mesut Ozil revealed he is stalling over a new deal because he is unsure on Wenger’s future and it is an important factor for him.
“It was a frustrating few months. We were talking about a new contract since the beginning of the year, so I am very happy to carry on this good adventure with the Arsenal family,” Giroud told the club’s official website.

“He [Wenger] built this club and I don’t think he will leave, we hope. So I wanted to [renew] and I think it was the moment for me to sign a new contract. We’re going to hope that he signs himself.”
Giroud has been in excellent form this season but he has struggled to land a regular starting role in the Premier League as Alexis Sanchez has often been given the nod up front.
The Frenchman has made 19 appearances this season but has made just three starts in the Premier League despite a hugely impressive goal-scoring record.
The 30-year-old has netted six Premier League goals and provided three assists in just 13 appearances in the English top flight and he scored a sensational scorpion-kick goal against Crystal Palace on New Year’s Day.
Arsenal sealed new deals for Francis Coquelin and Laurent Koscielny this week as well as announcing the signing of non-league star Cohen Bramall.
Football Insider verdict
Giroud is a much-criticised striker who has a fantastic record. It’s great news for Arsenal that he’s committed his future to the club despite not getting the first-team starts he would want. It’s also telling that he’s the second senior man after Ozil to state that he wants Wenger to stay as manager. Wenger’s contract is up at the end of this season and it seems odd that no announcement has been made yet – if the news was positive. Is it too much to read between the lines and think that some assurance has been made to Giroud in private? It’s a point of contention with fans divided into those who want him to leave and those who can’t contemplate him leaving. Whatever the news is, the club can’t please everyone.
