'Give the kid a chance', he's a worldbeater - Spurs Exclusive: Pundit view on shock Merson claim
The criticism aimed at Tottenham striker Harry Kane since his return to action has been “way too harsh”, according to Noel Whelan.
The former Premier League striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, has ripped into the England hitman’s doubters and insists he has performed admirably after coming back from injury.
Speaking after the 1-1 draw against Manchester United, Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson suggested that Kane will struggle to score goals under Jose Mourinho and that he will be considering his future at Spurs.
The 26-year-old, who suffered a serious injury blow at the start of 2020, netted his first goal since returning against West Ham on Tuesday.
Whelan has shot down Merson’s claims Kane will struggle under Mourinho and insists he just needed time to get back into the swing of things.
Whelan told Football Insider: “We did say he needed time, you can’t expect him to come straight back in and get straight into the rhythm of Premier League football again.

“I know was a lot of people scathing at him about the lack of presence he had against Manchester United but give the kid a chance. It takes a bit of time to get back into the groove of things and to find that rhythm, that pace to a game.
“I think he’s one of these players who will score goals under Jose Mourinho, he’ll score goals under anybody. It’s been way too harsh, I mean come on.
“He’s one of the best strikers in the world, he’s been out six months – we didn’t expect to see him back, it’s great to see him back, give him a bit of praise. It’s taken him two games to get back on the scoresheet, I don’t think anybody can criticise that as a goalscorer.”
Kane has now scored 18 goals in 27 appearances for Tottenham this season, including six strikes in five Champions League games.
Spurs’ next game sees them take on Sheffield United away from home.
