'Going back to the Martin O'Neill days' - Hutton in big Villa dressing room claim pre-Leeds
Alan Hutton admits he has been blown away by the confidence being shown by the Aston Villa squad this season.
The former Villa and Scotland star, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, claims he rarely saw the same sort of belief during his eight years in the Villa Park dressing room.
Dean Smith’s men have made a perfect start to the new Premier League season with four wins under their belts.
They put Liverpool to the sword with a 7-2 thrashing earlier this month and have also seen off Sheffield United, Fulham and Leicester City.
Hutton, who joined the club in 2011 and left following promotion in 2019, admits he cannot remember a time when the dressing room looked so confident going into every game.
Asked what had changed since the 4-0 defeat to Leicester back in March, Hutton told Football Insider: “It just seems everything – the mood, the mentality, the way the players approach it.

“For me they’re playing with confidence that I’ve not even seen in my time there. When I think back, obviously there were times in my spell where the team were confident, I don’t mean we weren’t a confident team.
“You just look at them and they’re going into every game thinking: ‘We can win this.’ That’s how I look at them at the moment.
“I’m going back to the Martin O’Neill days when we were finishing up the top end of the league.
“They’re going into games thinking: ‘We can win this, we’ve got the players, we’ve got the ability, we’ve got a solid defence,’ and they look to confident with each other, in harmony playing.”
