‘Going to get further punishment’ – Expert reviews Aston Villa transfer plans

Aston Villa will need to sell before bringing players in this summer but UEFA’s sanctions are complicating their plans.

That is according to football finance expert Dan Plumley, who told Football Insider exclusively that Jacob Ramsey’s sale would not help the Villains comply with the European governing body’s sanctions.

Aston Villa were fined £9million by UEFA after failing to comply with their financial regulations, and face a further £12.9m in fines over the next three years if their issues continue.

The club are also facing the possibility of a one-year ban from European competition if they make losses of more than €85m (£74m).

UEFA’s rules differ from the Premier League’s. Whereas the Premier League require clubs to not exceed a certain amount in losses, the European governing body’s demand that teams restrict spending to a certain percentage.

Last season it stood at 80%, but going into the 2025/26 season, that limit will be lowered to 70% [UEFA].

Jacob Ramsey’s exit does not save Aston Villa

Ramsey has been linked with an exit from Aston Villa this summer, but Plumley told Football Insider exclusively that his sale would not have the same positive impact for compliance with UEFA’s rules, as it would for the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules (PSR).

As such, the senior lecturer from Sheffield Hallam University predicts that Unai Emery‘s side will not be “hugely active” in terms of incomings this summer, as they look to lower the cost of their squad.

Ramsey could still leave, and his departure would help with compliance, but it would not allow Villa to then go out and splash the cash on a number of additions.

Plumley said: “I didn’t expect them to be hugely active in this window because of the UEFA situation. That still stands from what we’ve seen.

“If they are going to want to bring players in, they’re going to have to sell to offset that and they’re going to have to find a way to get the squad cost and the losses down to comply again with UEFA.

“I’m not so sure whether even selling him unlocked doors for loads of players to come in.

“I think it’s more a case of, they are where they are, and they’ve got to look to comply with UEFA or else they’re going to get further punishment.”

Aston Villa target Dominic Calvert-Lewin

As they bid to reduce the cost of their squad, Aston Villa look set to target a deal for Dominic Calvert-Lewin, sources told Football Insider.

The decision comes amid uncertainty surrounding Ollie Watkins’ future at Villa Park.

The England international had been expected to leave the Midlands club this summer, but there have been no concrete offers for the striker.

Watkins has been linked with several of England’s biggest clubs, but his options have dwindled after Liverpool and Arsenal both secured their striker targets, Hugo Ekitike and Viktor Gyokeres.
