Gomez expected to hold crunch talks with Liverpool after latest - pundit

Noel Whelan has suggested Joe Gomez could hold talks with Jurgen Klopp over his long-term future at Liverpool next summer.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the Reds would be reluctant to let the 24-year-old leave before hitting the prime of his career.

Gomez is currently missing through injury and faces a fight to reinstate himself in the Liverpool starting XI.

He has Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate, Joel Matip and Nathaniel Phillips for competition when he does return to fitness.

Whelan suggested Gomez would want to discuss his game time and long-term future with Klopp towards the end of the season.

Asked if the 11-cap England international would be considering his future at Anfield, Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “I think that will come in the summertime.

“I think that will come with a chat with Jurgen Klopp and himself. When it comes to a 24-year-old, there’s still plenty of life in the player yet.

“He’s still very, very young, not even at the age of 26 where you play your best years of football. Liverpool will be reluctant.

“They’re building a squad and building a team that is going to be competing for the next four years. That is with the likes of Man United, Man City, Chelsea are up there as well.

“You need that strength in depth.”

Gomez, who has been described as a “sensational footballer” by Klopp,  has made seven appearances across all competitions so far this season.

However, he managed to play just 12 minutes in two Premier League outings before suffering a groin injury.
