Former Leeds United hitman Noel Whelan has revealed he is hoping midfielder Mateusz Klich can rediscover his golden touch after dropping out of form in the Whites’ own dip.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider the popular pundit, who is a regular visitor to Elland Road, heralded the performance of the Polish international against Aston Villa as he scored a contentious goal, while he found himself on the score sheet once again in the 3-2 defeat to Ipswich Town on Sunday.
With 10 goals to his name, as well as eight assists, the 28-year-old has been one of Leeds’ most important players but found his own form dropping off at the same time the Whites’ results faltered.
Backing Klich to return to the heights he has hit this season, Whelan exclusively told Football Insider: “I think we dominated the midfield area pretty much against Aston Villa and that’s probably one of the best midfields in the Championship. I think at times we passed around them, played through them very easily, it looked like we got our mojo back again.
“Mateusz Klich, he got the goal obviously, against Aston Villa, when I look back at it again I see nothing wrong with it, I really don’t. Some people stopped, defenders didn’t so he still had a lot to do and he scored a great goal. That will give him good confidence, his overall performance was a lot better than what we’ve seen.
“He had gone off the boil for a while but when you set your sights so high it’s difficult to always keep them up there and when he’s off for a couple of weeks or a few games, people notice that because they know there’s a better player in him.”
Having found himself out of favour last season, which included a loan spell at Dutch side FC Utrecht in the second half of the campaign, Klich is yet to miss a Championship match for the Whites.
