Newcastle United manager Rafael Benitez has confirmed that Florian Lejeune and Jesus Gamez are closing in on a return to action as the club ready themselves for a relegation battle involving half the Premier League.
The Magpies currently sit 16th in the top flight table, just one point off Stoke City in the first of the places in the drop zone, and there are just seven points separating 9th from 19th, with West Brom a further four points behind at the very foot of the table.
Benitez insists that he is relieved there are so many teams battling for survival alongside the Magpies, saying that securing a Premier League spot next season will come down to your own results rather than someone else’s.
He also revealed that the club are set for an imminent boost with defensive duo Gamez and Lejeune set to return from injury between now and the end of the campaign after their respective blows.
He told the Chronicle: “At least it’s not just one team that could be better than you and it’s down to them or us to stay up.
“That means we are going to have more chances to do well.
“Gamez is getting better. I was talking to him and he says he feels better.
“Lejuene has also been training with the team and that’s also good news.”
Newcastle failed to pull away from the relegation battle in their last outing, as they let a 1-0 slip away at Crystal Palace to end up sharing the points in a 1-1 draw, and face up against Manchester United on Sunday looking to avenge the 4-1 thrashing handed out by Jose Mourinho’s men at Old Trafford earlier in the season.
In other Newcastle United team news, the club have been handed another boost for the clash against the Red Devils.
