Graham Potter and David Moyes to Wolves? Pundit reacts to sack latest

Gary O’Neil could be sacked at Wolves as the owners are desperate for the club to remain in the Premier League by any means necessary.

This is according to former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson, who insisted that the likes of Graham Potter and David Moyes could now be looking at a short-term deal at Molineux.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Robinson, who remains well-connected in the game, explained that any incoming boss will be given the task of keeping them in the Premier League first and foremost.

Should any new boss fail to do so, it has been said that they will not want to remain at the club in the Championship given the difficulties it brings.

O’Neil has faced growing pressure after a slow start to the season in which Wolves have picked up just one point from their first seven games and conceded 21 goals.

Following the dismal run of results and performances, Robinson has insisted the boss could be dismissed – despite the difficult situation he has dealt with off the field.

Gary O’Neil faces sack as Wolves hierarchy line up replacements

Wolves have faced a perilous financial situation which meant limited backing for the manager in the transfer market despite losing some of his key players.

Robinson, however, believes that excuse may not be enough to save his job if results don’t pick up, and the desperation to stay in the Premier League could lead to his exit, with Potter and Moyes lined up as potential quick replacements.

I think Gary O’Neil is a very good manager and deserves their backing,” he told Football Insider.

“He’s had the rug pulled out from under him with the finances at the club and the sale of two key players in Killman and Neto.

“But we’re in a results business and results haven’t been good enough. Performances haven’t been good enough either.

“The way that they’ve defended, especially against Brentford, has frustrated the fans.

“I personally hope he’s given time because he’s a bright, young English manager.

“I think Wolves are in a situation where they need somebody to keep them in the league, which will be a short-term appointment to keep them up.

“The likes of Graham Potter and David Moyes have already been linked to the job.

“Staying in the Premier League is so financially important and that’s why managers lose their jobs.

Having to get out of the Championship and back into the Premier League – everybody knows how hard it is and no manager wants to be put in that situation.

“So while they’re still in the Premier League, they’ll do all they can to ensure they stay there.

“Gary O’Neil may be a victim of circumstance, and with the way they’re playing and the results they’re getting, it’s not looking good.”
