Graham Potter to Everton? Keith Wyness shares new manager verdict

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has suggested Graham Potter may not have the right experience to lead the club out of a relegation battle.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – suggested the Toffees need a manager with experience of navigating his side out of the drop zone.

Everton boss Sean Dyche is under pressure on Merseyside despite winning 4-0 against Wolves on Wednesday (4 December).

Dyche’s side sit five points above the drop zone but now face Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea and Man City in their next four Premier League games.

Potter is available following his sacking at Chelsea in April 2023 but has also been lined up for the job at West Ham with Julen Lopetegui under pressure.

He finished 15th and 16th during his first two seasons at Brighton (2019-20 and 2020-21 campaigns) but the south coast club never entered the relegation zone during that time.

Potter may not be the right man for Everton, says Wyness

Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “We need to go into the new stadium in the Premier League.

“It’d be a disaster if we don’t.

“I know from my own experience how hard the Championship is to get out of. Everybody says it, and it’s true. I’ve lived it and I’ve got the scars.

“In terms of a new manager, Premier League experience is what you need.

“I’ve been looking at what Potter has done, and he’s only ever been in one real relegation battle from what I can see.

“It’s got to be someone with that experience. This next six months is going to be crucial.”
