Graham Potter to Tottenham: Chris Sutton reacts to Postecoglou sack option

Graham Potter candidacy to replace Ange Postecoglou as Tottenham manager has been scoffed at by Chris Sutton.

Following their 4-3 defeat to Chelsea on Sunday (8 December), Spurs have now won just one of their last seven games in all competitions.

They have dropped to 11th in the Premier League table, leading to calls for Postecoglou to be sacked by some supporters.

Speaking on the It’s All Kicking Off podcast though, Sutton admitted things needed to be better at Tottenham, but still argued that the Australian had changed some things for the better at the club.

He also questioned who an appropriate alternative to the Australian would be. When host Ian Ladyman suggested Graham Potter as an option, the former Celtic striker sarcastically said (16m 14s): “Well Graham Potter did well at Chelsea. He was a huge success at Chelsea.”

Ladyman then noted that to be a “facetious” response from Sutton, underlining the 51-year-old’s lack of approval for such a potential appointment.

Football Insider has reported that Potter is the leading candidate to replace Julen Lopetegui at West Ham, and has already held advanced talks with the Hammers.

Graham Potter would be a risky appointment for Tottenham

Football Insider Opinion

Admittedly, Postecoglou’s previous success with Sutton’s former club Celtic may have helped influence his defence of the current Spurs boss to some extent here.

Even so, he may have a point when implying that Potter would be a risky appointment given his record at Chelsea.

The Englishman won just 12 of 31 games in charge of the Blues, losing 11, before being sacked after just under than eight months at Stamford Bridge between September 2022 and April 2023.

That does suggest he may struggle to cope with the expectation of managing a big club where there is a desire for European qualification and silverware, as should be the case at Tottenham.

Potter has also not worked since his departure from Chelsea, and the longer he remains out of the game for, the greater the risk would be in appointing him, given how things can change quickly in football.

It is also worth noting that there are other managers seemingly attracting the interest of Tottenham as they consider their options other than Postecoglou, who could also do a decent job there.

So as Sutton suggests, Spurs should not be rushing into a move for Potter, if they are to decide they want to change manager in the near future.

In other news, Dejan Kulusesvski should have been sent off for Tottenham against Chelsea, it has been claimed.
