‘Graham Potter’s transfer plans dented’ after West Ham points deduction latest

Graham Potter is already on thin ice at West Ham after a poor start to life at the London Stadium following his appointment in January.

Julen Lopetegui was backed heavily with several new signings last summer (2024) but a number of those arrivals have fallen flat.

Despite their big spending, West Ham posted a profit of £57million before tax in the 2023-24 campaign.

Premier League clubs are only allowed to lose £105million across three years before incurring a potential points deduction under Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed West Ham won’t be “free-spending” to back Potter as they were at the start of Lopetegui’s tenure.

West Ham ‘coming towards PSR situation’, says Wyness

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness insisted West Ham are “coming towards a PSR situation” following their recent big spending.

The Irons sit 17th in the Premier League table with just three games remaining in this season – despite winning the Uefa Conference League just two years.

Wyness claimed the signings of last summer “haven’t worked” for West Ham.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “West Ham are still going to be okay in terms of the PSR situation.

“But they have spent a lot of money since the landmark sale of Declan Rice.

“That was the last big chunk of cash to come in – and I wouldn’t say that money has been wasted, but it certainly hasn’t worked for West Ham.

“I’ve got to say they could be coming towards a PSR situation.

“They certainly won’t be free-spending, as they were to back Lopetegui. Potter will be asking for that, and already we’re seeing some unrest with the fans – they will want new signings.”

Potter sack latest from West Ham

Meanwhile, Football Insider revealed last month that West Ham are unlikely to sack Potter in the summer despite frustrations surrounding a disappointing season.

He has won just three of 15 games in charge at the London Stadium since succeeding Lopetegui in early January.

The Irons boss signed a contract running until June 2027 upon his arrival.
