Graham Roberts claims Tottenham 29-year-old is playing out of his skin

By Dominic Toner

Graham Roberts believes that Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen has been superb this season.

The 29-year-old has become a crucial player for Spurs since he moved to White Hart Lane in 2012.

The centre-back has been particularly impressive in the last couple of seasons as he has built a formidable partnership alongside team-mate Toby Alderweireld.

The north London club are regarded as one of the best defences in the Premier League and the Belgian centre-backs play a crucial role.

Ex-Spurs player Roberts has hailed the importance of Vertonghen to the side and claims he is enjoying a fantastic season.

“Jan Vertonghen has been playing out of his skin this season totally superb,” Roberts wrote on his personal Twitter account.

Vertonghen has made 24 appearances this season across all competitions and missed just one Premier League game, which he was forced to do as he serves a one-game suspension for five yellow cards.

The defender was back into the starting XI on Thursday night and helped Spurs complete an impressive 2-0 home victory over title rivals Chelsea.

Dele Alli continued his recent goalscoring run as he headed in twice, but Spurs’ defence was equally impressive.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side managed to nullify the threat of the division’s top scorer and Diego Costa endured a frustrating night.

Vertonghen is regarded as one of Spurs’ most consistent performers and is a huge fan favourite after making 186 appearances for the club.
