Wilshere more welcome - Graham Roberts delivers brilliant response to Sol Campbell snub by Tottenham

By Alex Stevens

Graham Roberts has delivered a no-holds-barred attack on Sol Campbell after he was reportedly not invited by Tottenham for their White Hart Lane farewell.

The Times claim Spurs academy graduate Campbell will be a notable absentee from a parade of former Spurs players and managers following the final home match against Manchester United on 14 May.

It is reported that Tottenham officials regard the former England international as a hate figure among supporters for running down his contract in 2001 and joining bitter rivals Arsenal on a free transfer.

It is a view echoed by former Spurs defender Graham Roberts, who delivered an outspoken response to Campbell’s snub.

Roberts claimed the player cost Tottenham “£20million” and that he “lied all the way” to give the impression he might stay at his boyhood club 16 years ago when his plan was always to join Arsenal for nothing.

Former centre-back Roberts claimed Arsenal icon Tony Adams and current midfielder Jack Wilshere, who is deeply unpopular among Spurs fans, would be more welcome than Campbell at the 14 May day of celebrations.

Campbell, 42, made 315 appearances for Spurs during a brilliant career that made him one of the outstanding defenders of his generation.

But he will never be forgiven by many Tottenham fans for crossing the north London divide and joining Arsenal, where he won two Premier League titles and three FA Cups.

In other Tottenham news, the club have sensationally terminated the contract of one of their defenders.
