Granit Xhaka to quit Sunderland? Sky journalist shares update on January transfer

Sunderland captain Granit Xhaka has been gaining interest from a European club following his impressive performances at the Stadium of Light.

Xhaka signed for Sunderland from Bayer Leverkusen in the summer in a £13million deal, after two seasons in Germany.

The Switzerland international had spent seven seasons at Arsenal, and has already become a crucial player for the Black Cats.

Xhaka scored his first Sunderland goal in their 1-1 draw against Everton, whilst he helped Regis Le Bris’ side to a 2-2 draw against his former club last time out.

Granit Xhaka linked to Juventus

As per Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie on X, [18 November], Sunderland have no intentions of selling the 33-year-old just six months into his time on Wearside.

A report had claimed that Juventus were plotting a stunning €20m January move to sign the midfielder.

However, Downie has reassured Sunderland supporters that Xhaka is going nowhere.

Sunderland will not be allowing Granit Xhaka to leave in January and not at that price,” Downie posted.

In addition to that, the Sunderland captain is very happy on Wearside and is not looking to move anywhere. He’s only just started…”

Xhaka could be important during January

Sunderland could lose several players to the African Cup of Nations during December and January, meaning the club is unlikely to sanction the sale of any key players during the period.

The Black Cats could be one of the sides most affected by the tournament, so selling a player as important as Xhaka makes no sense.

Xhaka’s leadership qualities have been pivotal to Sunderland’s success thus far, and the experienced star will be even more important during the heavy festive period.
