‘Greedy’ Man United have shown ‘lack of respect’ to Lingard after newspaper report – pundit

Noel Whelan has blasted Manchester United over their treatment of Jesse Lingard in transfer talks this month.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, accused the Red Devils of being “greedy” and “disrespectful” towards the 29-year-old.

As reported by the Daily Mail on Wednesday (26 January), Lingard is furious with club chiefs after talks over a loan move to Newcastle collapsed.

The attacking midfielder reportedly feels priced out of a move to St James’ Park after the Red Devils demanded a loan deal worth a potential £16.5million in fees, wages and bonuses.

The report claims Lingard is also angry Manchester United rejected offers from West Ham and Tottenham.

Whelan insisted the England international has every right to be fuming.

“I think Lingard probably would just love to go out there and play football,” Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge.

There’s no thought about the player and what he wants. This is all about the club, it’s very greedy actually.

“If I was Jesse Lingard, I’d be desperately upset with the club about the offer and what they’re asking Newcastle to give them. If you value me at that amount of money, you’ve not been playing me for the last two seasons.

“I think I’d be on the cross side if I was Jesse Lingard. He probably would have been a big player for Newcastle

“They should show some loyalty to Jesse Lingard, who’s been there right from the beginning as a young player.

“They’ve shown a complete lack of respect to Newcastle and the player. He needs to go out there and play. I’m sure he’d like to be part of the fight.”

Lingard has only played 273 minutes this season.
