Greenwood suffers 'worst nightmare' after Leeds injury update - Whelan

Noel Whelan has admitted Sam Greenwood has suffered “any young player’s worst nightmare” after picking up an injury at Leeds United.

Speaking to Football Insider, the former Leeds striker and club ambassador admitted the 19-year-old deserved a chance to stake his claim for a first-team role.

Greenwood took to his personal Instagram account on Monday (10 January) to confirm he picked up an injury in the FA Cup defeat to West Ham.

Making his first start for Leeds, Greenwood lasted 45 minutes before being substituted off.

Speaking at his press conference on Friday (14 January), Marcelo Bielsa confirmed Patrick Bamford, Rodrigo Moreno and Pascal Struijk are the only players likely to return from injury against West Ham on Sunday.

Whelan admitted Greenwood has missed out on an opportunity to shine due to his layoff.

Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “When you’re young, you’re learning your trade. You’re desperately trying to get that first-team start.

“When it does come around and you pick up an injury, that’s a young player’s worst nightmare. That’s your opportunity to shine and show what you can do and maybe nail down that position.

“Especially when you’ve seen Joe Gelhardt do so well. Joe’s one of the younger players that he’s been brought with over the last two seasons.

“That was his opportunity. It’s desperate to see another injury to another player but that has just been our season.

“It has been a catalogue of injuries. I’ve never known another season quite like it.”

Greenwood has made four senior appearances for Leeds to date.

His only Premier League runout came against former club Arsenal back in December.
