Greg Taylor shares Luke McCowan link-up as Celtic exit looms

Celtic left-back Greg Taylor has shared a post of him and Luke McCowan together as his future with the Glasgow giants hangs in the balance.

Brendan Rodgers’ side cruised to a fourth successive Scottish Premiership title last month, with Taylor again playing a key part in their success from left-back.

The 27-year-old was once part of arch-rivals Rangers‘ youth academy, but he moved to Parkhead in 2019 after three impressive years in Kilmarnock’s senior side.

He has made over 200 appearances for the club in the six years that have followed, but looks set to leave in a matter of weeks, after Football Insider revealed back in April that Taylor’s Celtic days were numbered as he headed towards the last stretch of his current contract.

With a matter of weeks now until he becomes a free agent, the Scotland international is still yet to sign a new deal, and an exit looks likely after the Bhoys recently re-signed cult hero Kieran Tierney on a free transfer from Arsenal.

Greg Taylor and Luke McCowan link-up away from Celtic as 27-year-old nears Parkhead exit

The 27-year-old has won five Scottish Premiership titles and three Scottish Cup and League Cups each with the Hoops, and he is set to be an attractive option to clubs that may need a left-back on the cheap, after Football Insider recently revealed that Dinamo Zagreb failed in an effort to sign Taylor with a “lucrative package” in January.

Rangers were recently backed to make a move for Taylor when his Celtic contract expires, and while boss Rodgers wants to keep him at the club [BBC], he is currently heading toward the exit door if nothing changes.

The Scotland international’s impending departure has not stopped him from linking-up with his Bhoys teammates in the off-season, with Taylor sharing a picture to his Instagram stories on Wednesday (18 June) of him and Celtic midfielder Luke McCowan on holiday, with a love-heart emoji as a caption.

Football Insider verdict

Taylor has been one of the more underrated players within Celtic’s squad over their last few dominant seasons, but his quality is undoubted and it would be a loss to the team and dressing room if he were to depart this summer.

Boss Rodgers recently praised the 27-year-old as “very instrumental off the field,” but his last campaign was one of lesser opportunity as he made 24 league appearances compared to his 30 in 2023/24 and 28 in 2022/23.

Tierney’s arrival is bound to have a detrimental effect on Taylor’s game-time if he stays on with the Glasgow giants, and so now feels like the right time for him to leave the club for pastures new, especially with both PAOK and FC Copenhagen believed to be planning to offer him a contract [Daily Record] this summer.

He will also harbour ambitions of representing Scotland at their first World Cup since 1998 in the USA next year, provided they qualify, and he knows that call-up will only come with regular minutes after he was left out of Steve Clarke’s squad in March during a period on the bench in Rodgers’ side.
